Local High School Tennis
Boys & Girls teams are offered at each of the four major high schools in town: Century, John Marshall, Lourdes, and Mayo. The programs are designed for grades 7-12. However, depending on the level of play, some 7th and 8th graders may be best suited to continue with group instruction at their club. Check with instructors for appropriateness of HS tennis.
- Girls season: Mid-August through 3rd week of Oct. (JV is done a bit earlier)
- Boys season: 3rd week of March through beginning of June. (JV done a bit earlier)
- Teams carry 20-40 players, the top 10 players being varsity. The next 10 are JV, the next 10 B-squad. Your goal being to find your spot and work your way up the ladder.
Requirements
To participate on a high school team you must satisfy the following requirements:
- Participation fee paid to the high school. Call the Athletic Office of the appropriate High School a few months before the season starts.
- Physical on file. Sports physcials are done in Sports Med on certain days or check with your personal physician.
- Signed commiment form promising not to smoke, drink alcohol, and follow rules of the State High School League. Check with Athletic Office
- Commit to your coach and teammates to put tennis first during the season - above other extra-curricular activities. Be there everyday!
- Realize that the coach may have as high as a 20:1 ratio. The season is exciting, competitive and social, and many good friendships are formed.
